  • 第一句话使用一系列的现在完成式:”those who have known defeat, (have) known suffering,… and have found their way out of the depths” 来描述 “the most beautiful people we have known” (我们所认识最美丽的人)。第二句 “These people have… that…” 结构上类似 “so… that…” 的句型,”that” 在句子里有连接的作用。如:The weather condition is so severe that we can’t risking going to the sea today. (天气状况非常的恶劣使我们今天不能冒险出航。) “fill A with B” 是「使 A 充满 B」的意思。’suffer’ 是「受苦,忍受」,为动词。’appreciation’ 是「感谢;欣赏」,为名词。’compassion’ 是「同情,怜悯」,为名词。
  • 伊莉莎白‧库伯勒-罗斯 (1926-2004) 为瑞士出生的精神科医师,后来移局美国,为濒临死亡经验研究 (near-death studies) 的先驱,她的 On Death and Dying (论死亡与临终) 为该领域的开创性著作。她一生获得 20 个荣誉学位 (其中 19 个为博士),在 2007 年入选美国国家妇女名人堂 (National Women’s Hall of Fame)。
